Leaving the Circus Behind: Our Perspective on Nonprofit Compliance

By: Ron Barrett, COGENCY GLOBAL on Thu, Jan 31, 2019

For charitable organizations, nonprofit compliance often lurks in the bottom of every task list. Working on activities that directly support an organization’s mission is rewarding – and often the reason why people are drawn to working in the nonprofit sector.

The charitable solicitation registration filings, renewals and annual corporate compliance that come with running a nonprofit? Not nearly as compelling…unless you have a special penchant for filings.

The reality is, sidestepping these compliance tasks can put a nonprofit at risk of late fees and fines, tarnishing their reputation with donors and funders and losing the ability to legally fundraise.

Based on our experience working with nonprofit clients on everything from organization formation to charitable registration renewals, we've learned that when compliance needs and organizational goals collide, juggling between filing deadlines and mission priorities can make the office feel like a circus. That resulting chaos often takes talented people away from the work they love.

Now, we generally avoid ‘tooting our own horn’ in this blog but today we’d like to make an exception. With feedback from nonprofit clients and partners, we created a short video of the compliance experience that we want to share.

How would you describe your experiences with compliance, nonprofit or otherwise?
